After 23 years, the British cult film is returning with a sequel.

Ahead of the upcoming Women’s European Championship final in Basel, Switzerland, Gurinder Chadha, the writer and director of the film, has confirmed that a sequel is being developed for her 2002 hit film, Bend It Like Beckham.

Starring Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra, the film followed the story of a British-Indian teenager, Jasminder, who loves David Beckham and wants to play soccer against the wishes of her strict parents.

Here’s all we know about the upcoming sequel in 2027.

The filmmaker told Deadline, “I’m excited to revisit the original characters, revive the enduring story, and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women’s game.” Apart from Parminder and Keira, other stars Archie Panjabi and Juliet Stevenson are also aware that the sequel is in development.

She added, “I’m pretty certain that everyone’s going to want to come back. Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.”

She co-wrote the 2002 screenplay with Guljit Bindra and her husband, Paul Mayeda Berges. Gurinder will be collaborating with Paul again for the sequel. Her plan is to have the sequel ready for the 25th anniversary of the film in 2027.

Gurinder told the BBC, “I didn’t want to do anything because I didn’t have a story. Then I came up with a great story, a really super-cool story. So now I’m inspired. I literally came up with it just about a month ago. It’s my very clear wish to bring the characters back very, very soon. Women’s football is more competitive, more exciting, and more global than ever. It is an honor for me to be a small part of it.”

The 2002 feature has inspired many female footballers worldwide since its release to pursue the sport.
