Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident that killed a 21-year-old polytechnic student and temporary employee of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Samiul Haque. The actress was detained late Tuesday night in North Guwahati and taken to Dispur Police Station for preliminary questioning. According to the police, Nandini was formally arrested around 1:30 AM at the Panbazar All Women Police Station. She has been booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This act pertains to culpable homicide.
But what happened during the incident that took place on July 25? The student was struck by a speeding vehicle while on duty. The eyewitnesses have said that the driver whose name was Kashyap, ran away from the scene and did not even stop. Samiul Haque was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital initially but later shifted to Apollo hospital. However, he could not survive and died there next day. The All Assam Polytechnic Students’ Union (AAPSU) lodged an FIR and have been protesting to get justice for the same.
Public in Assam have been angry about this and are protesting. Various Civil society groups have also been asking for legal action. The police have been checking CCTV footage, eyewitness statements and forensic evidence to get information about the case. The investigators in the case have said that the final post-mortem and forensic reports are yet to come and after that more charges will be filed.
The body was sent for post-mortem at GMCH on Wednesday. Nandini Kashyap’s family has also issued a statement. Her mother has said that she tried to help Haque financially but was obstructed by a group of youths at the hospital. The police has advised her family to stay out of the public eye for safety reasons. Her mother further claimed that the accident happened because of Nandini Kashyap’s driver and not her.
