Nepal Protest: After security forces opened fire on demonstrators, causing 20 fatalities and more than 250 injuries, violence broke out in Kathmandu, Nepal. Actress Manisha Koirala denounced the crackdown as a “black day” for Nepal. Her remarks came after fatal violence caused by Gen Z activists protesting corruption and the controversial government ban on social media sites including Facebook.

Manisha Koirala slams police crackdown on protesters

Manisha Koirala, who hails from Nepal, took to social media to voice her disgust. She posted a picture of a bloody shoe along with a Nepali caption. The translated post stated, “Today is a black day for Nepal. When bullets respond to the voice of the people, outrage against corruption and demand for justice.”

Gen Z protesters storms Parliament…

Digital criticism against Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s decision to ban 26 social media platforms sparked protests. In light of growing accusations of corruption, this action was generally seen as an effort to put down opposition. In reaction, thousands of young protesters, mostly from Generation Z, surrounded the Parliament complex.

Curfew enforced in Kathmandu, other key cities

During the altercations, police employed rubber bullets, tear gas, and batons. The army was sent to many places to reestablish order as tensions increased throughout the nation. Kathmandu and other major cities, including Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Butwal, Pokhara, Itahari, and Damak, were subject to curfews.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned in response to public outrage over the violence and strong political pressure. He accepted moral accountability for what happened during the demonstrations. The incident brought to light the rising discontent with how the administration handles dissent.
