Janaki vs State of Kerala controversy

Suresh Gopi’s upcoming movie Janaki vs State of Kerala has been ruling the headlines over the past few weeks as the film ran into trouble with the Censor Board. Due to the use of name ‘Janaki’ in the title, the Censor Board allegedly refused to grant certification to the film.

CBF’s objection to the title

As per the reports, it was being stated that the Censor Board objected to the title stating that Janaki is another word for Hindu Goddess Sita. Thus, it should not be used for a r*pe survivor in the film. Reports state that CBFC had also proposed almost 96 cuts to the film.

Censor Board’s argument

The Censor Board had also argued that using the name for a character that faces sensitive and traumatising scenes involving characters with different religions could hurt religious sentiments.

Makers moved to Kerala High Court

The makers, however, did not bow down to the changes demanded by the Censor Board. Makers moved to Kerala High Court to fight over the stance of CBFC.

New title is – Janaki V vs State of Kerala

Now, CBFC counsel Abhinav Chandrachud suggested a slight change in the title of the movie and the makers have agreed to it. Now, the movie is titled as ‘Janaki V vs State of Kerala’.

Changes suggested in the film

Further, as per a report in Mint, the CBFC has now asked for only two cuts in the film instead of the 96 cuts suggested earlier. The Censor Board has asked to change the title and mute the word Janaki during a cross-examination scene.
