Zubeen Garg, the renowned Assamese singer, tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, at the age of 52, due to drowning while scuba diving in Singapore. Here’s what the death reports revealed.
Popular singer Zubeen Garg died in a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Zubeen, popularly known as Zubeen Da ruled the hearts of people with his music and melodious voice. His fans fulfilled one of the singer’s last wishes, he had once stated on stage that when he passed away, people should sing the song Mayabini Ratir Buket during his funeral procession. While various theories emerged regarding the cause of his death, his death certificate clearly stated drowning. On the morning of September 20, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on his social media account that Zubeen’s post-mortem would be conducted in Singapore, and the process would be completed by 2 pm (SGT). He later confirmed that the post-mortem had been completed and the singer’s body had been handed over to the accompanying team. Indian Embassy officials were also present. The Chief Minister stated that Zubeen’s death certificate states the cause of death as drowning, but this is only an official certificate. The real information will be obtained only from the post-mortem report. He stated that the post-mortem report and death certificate are two different documents. The Assam government has requested the full post-mortem report from the Singapore High Commission and will also send it to the CID.

Meanwhile, Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, revealed in an interview that her husband had gone to an island in Singapore with his friends. Seven or eight people, including a drummer and manager, accompanied them on the trip. Everyone wore life jackets and went swimming in the sea. However, Zubeen later decided to swim again and suffered a seizure during that time. Garima explained that Zubeen had suffered similar attacks several times before, but he had survived each time. This time, his condition became critical, and team members immediately rescued him. He was immediately rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was kept in the ICU for nearly two hours.
However, another important fact came to light. The Chief Minister of Assam stated in a press conference that a video showed Zubeen jumping into the water wearing a life jacket and returning to the boat after 1 minute and 26 seconds. The Chief Minister explained that, according to a PTI report, Zubeen went swimming again and wasn’t wearing a life jacket at the time.
