Ashish Kapoor, known for his role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, was taken into custody on September 2 in Pune, Maharashtra, due to a rape case filed against him in Delhi.
Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court on Saturday sent TV actor Ashish Kapoor to 14-day judicial custody. He was produced before the court of Link Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Payal Singhal after police interrogation. Kapoor was arrested from Pune on September 2. This arrest is related to the gangrape case, which was reported by a woman. On the complaint of the woman, an FIR was registered on August 11, 2025, in which sections like rape, gang rape and causing hurt were imposed. The complainant woman had told the police that she was invited to a party organized in Ashish Kapoor’s neighborhood. There she alleges that her drink was mixed with intoxicants, after which she fainted. The woman claimed that in an unconscious state she was dragged to the washroom and gang-raped. Earlier, the woman had named several other people in her complaint, but later changed her statement and accused only Ashish Kapoor of rape.

After the arrest of Ashish Kapoor, Delhi Police had demanded five days of police custody in the court. The police said that they have to recover the mobile phone of the accused for investigation, get his potency test done and investigate the role of other accused in the case. On September 3, Tis Hazari Court granted four days of police remand and also allowed the police to conduct a potency test. Although Kapoor was to be produced in court on September 7, the police produced him a day earlier.
What does Ashish Kapoor’s lawyer say?
Ashish Kapoor’s lawyers Deepak Sharma, Rajan Oberoi and Somesh Oberoi pleaded on his behalf in the court. The lawyers argued that the mobile phone cannot be recovered from Kapoor because according to the police status report, that phone is with co-accused Kapil Gupta and Ritu Gupta. The lawyers also said that Kapil Gupta has already got anticipatory bail from the court, so there is no need for Ashish Kapoor’s police custody. Let us tell you that Kapil Gupta is a pilot by profession and Ritu Gupta is a businesswoman. At the same time, Ashish Kapoor’s interim bail application automatically became meaningless after his arrest.
